Are you ready to start the gardening season? Here are a few dates to put in your calendar:

1) The first PennDOT Adopt-a-Highway trash cleanup of the year is scheduled for April 30th. Volunteers should meet at the Stone Arch Bridge at 8 a.m.

2) On May 22nd, 2011, at 2:30 p.m., we will be dedicating our 2nd Blue Star Memorial By-way Marker, to be located at the Juniata County Courthouse grounds. All Mifflin County Garden Club members are encouraged to attend.

3) This year's flower show will be held from June 23rd through June 25th, at the Mifflin County Library. The theme is "Blooms Throughout Time".

See you tonight at the Lewistown Country Club! Dinner begins at 6:30 pm.

Garden Club giving local scholarship

From the Lewistown Sentinel:

LEWISTOWN - The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania offers scholarships to students who plan to further their education in agriculture-related subjects.

Areas of study may include: horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, city planning, land management and allied subjects.

The scholarship is a minimum of $1,000. Only high school or college graduate students who are residents of Pennsylvania are eligible and must be sponsored by a federated Garden Club. The Mifflin County Garden Club is the sponsoring club for this area. The local club sponsors its own scholarship award of $1,000.

Applications for both scholarships are due to Michele Bair by February 3, 2011. For more information, call chairman Bair at 248-9547.

October's Meeting

Please join us tonight at 7:00 pm at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewistown for October's meeting and program. Mr. Albert Eelman and another representative from the National Chestnut Foundation will give us as presentation about what needs to be done to save our chestnut trees. Please see page 20 in your yearbook for information regarding Artistic Design and Horticulture tournaments. Also, remember to bring a photograph from your own garden for the photography competition!

"Rich and I greatly appreciate the efforts of the garden club in honoring Quintus' request by planting this lovely tree in Marcella's memory. The Mifflin County Garden Club gave her many years of enjoyment; I know she would be (and is) delighted to know that she is remembered with a living tree. The last time I was at the library, I remembered the tree when I was leaving and I walked around until I found it. Somehow it just seems to suit her perfectly. Also, the landscaping at the Library is lovely. Please pass our personal thanks to all the members of the club regarding the memorial tree as well as our praise for the wonderful work the garden club does to provide joy and beauty to our County.

The artistic design tournament features Mono-Botanic design using roses.

Blue Star Memorial

The Mifflin County Garden Club, in cooperation with Derry Township Community Park of Mifflin County is placing a Blue Star By-Way Marker within the park as a tribute to all our service personnel. The dedication program will be held on Sunday, May 2nd, 2010, at 3:30 pm.

The Blue Star Memorial Marker program was introduced by the New Jersey Garden Clubs in 1944 when they planted 6000 dogwood trees as a beautification project and a "living" memorial to the service men and women who had fought in World War II, and to greet the men and women returning from war. The National Garden Clubs adopted the program, designed a marker, and in 1951 it was expanded to honor all veterans - past, present and future. The program quickly spread across our nation.

Flower Arrangements with Jo Ann

Jo Ann Smith wants YOU to feel more comfortable making flower arrangements. And to prove it, she is hosting a super-fun (I hear donuts might be involved) flower arranging workshop in her gorgeous garden on Saturday, April 17th, from 8 am to 10 am. If you are still an arranging novice, I highly recommend that you attend. It sounds like she means business.

Philadelphia Flower Show Bus Trip

The annual bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show is March 2nd, 2010. This year's theme is "Passport to the World", and the deadline to register is February 19th. The cost is $67.00. The winners of this year's Door Decorating contest are in today's Lewistown Sentinel.
LEWISTOWN - Steve and Lisa Knudson, of 112 N. Walnut St., Lewistown, are the winners of the Carrie Dreese Award in the annual Mifflin County Garden Club Christmas Door Decorating Contest.
The theme for 2009 was "Santa Travels The World". All winners were in Lewistown Borough. Other winners were:

- Randy & Tracy Leopold, 76 N. Pine Street, for overall design,
- Carol Stringer, 627 S. Grand Street, for wreath.
Red ribbons:

This year's theme is "Christmas Days of Yesteryear". Decorating hours will be Tuesday, December 1st, and Wednesday, December 2nd, between 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Please come on your assigned day - no exceptions please. Breakdown of decorations will be January 4th, 2010, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Please consult your garden club yearbook to find out which room (and therefore which day) you have been assigned to decorate. If anyone needs help about ideas or has questions, please call Carol Boring at 667-2421 after 5:00 pm.

LEWISTOWN - The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania will offer 10 scholarships to students who plan to further their education in an agriculture-related field.
Each scholarship is for a minimum of $1,000. Library Garden

Work was done this morning to put the library's garden to rest for the winter. We are meeting one last time on Tuesday, October 27th, at 12 noon, to cut back all of the chrysanthemums. It should take less than an hour. If you would like to come help, no need to notify anyone...just come with a garbage bag and a pair of bypass pruners. Thanks in advance!

Update: The garden's perennials were cut to the ground as scheduled, and the garden itself may not need further attention until Spring.

November's Meeting Information

Our next meeting will be on November 16th, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church, at 7 pm. Our program is "Make It And Take It". Members will make Christmas arrangements to take home. Please contact Marty Fisher if you have not yet signed up to make an arrangement - theivywreath@verizon.net - so that we can be sure to have enough materials.

Committee members are: Lori Mitzel (Chair), William Basom, Marianne Wilson, Faye Havice, and Jodi Smith.

No tournaments. Laurel awards will be presented.
